Chapter 22
Dustin lay on the bed after disposing of the condom and watched as Chantelle quickly dressed, wishing for all the world that heâd insisted on a no-phones-in-the-bedroom rule. Or, if not, that whatever the hell was going on outside wasnât happening.
Heâd just had some of the most amazing sex of his life⦠with one of the most amazing women heâd ever met. And, to top it all off, heâd given her her first orgasm. An experience like that was a once-in-a-lifetime thing. And he felt awed, humbled and very turned on.
She gave him an apologetic look as she smoothed down a plain white t-shirt over the waistband of her jeans and unlocked the bedroom door. âBe right back,â she promised.
âI canââ
âNo. Stay.â
Stay? He was nobodyâs Pomeranian. He doubted even Minerva, who was probably snoring in the bathroom, would take a âstayâ order.
He lasted all of thirty seconds, as the sound of voices wafted its way upstairs. Unlike Chantelle, who had an assortment of clothes at her disposal, all he had was the same clothes heâd been wearing when heâd popped out to the Duboisâ for dinner. And they were in a crushed and woebegone heap.
He put them on anyway, and walked out barefoot to the stairs, from where he could look down into the foyer, the same one in which heâd been standing a few hours before, looking up at Chantelle as she walked down the stairs. When heâd seen her knees for the first time. Since then, heâd seen a lot more than that, and would have been enjoying a second look right now if whoever the hell it was hadnât had the worst timing.
Chantelle was talking earnestly with two sandy-haired men, who looked to be in their forties, and a woman, an ash-blonde with a placid expression.
Instinctively, he knew who they were. After the discussions he and Chantelle had about her family, he was certain he was looking at her two stepbrothers and the wife of one of them. The elder, if he remembered correctly.
One of the men glanced up and spotted him and leaped back in surprise. Immediately, everyone turned towards him, including Chantelle.
âWho the hell are you?â demanded one man, planting his feet apart and putting his hands on his hips as if staking his claim on the land.
A huge display of bravado, and Dustin wanted to laugh. Instead, he walked with dignity down the steps and came to stand next to Chantelle before announcing, âMy name is Dustin Spencer, and I am Chantelleâs husband.â
The bombshell had the desired effect. The two men gasped, and the woman clapped both hands over her mouth as if sheâd uttered a naughty word. Chantelle gave him an approving half smile.
âYouâre her what?â The more aggressive man turned his head from Chantelle to Dustin and back, as if seeking confirmation or denial.
âYou heard me,â he said pleasantly, feeling mildly insulted by the look of horror on everyoneâs face.
Chantelle stepped in. âDustin and I were married a month ago.â
âAnd you
